Old India in New Mexico

What is the first impression you got when you read the sign?

Chances are you thought that it was a sign in some foreign establishment. But the truth is that it is displayed in a restaurant located inside a truck stop in San Jon New Mexico.

As I mentioned before, I am en-route to Sedona, AZ to attend the Inspired Livelihood workshop. Earlier this morning, as I left Texas, and entered New Mexico along Interstate 40, I saw a billboard advertising a place called Taste of India – American and it had some writing in one of the Indian languages, which I can only partially make out. So I gave into the curiosity and got off the freeway to check it out.

As I pulled into the Truck stop, I saw a smaller version of the billboard on the outside wall, which you can see below.

The Indian script says “Punjabi Dhaba” which means Punjabi Truck stop.

The thing about this place is that it is being remodeled. It seems like they have bought a property that used to be a truck stop that had failed and are trying to re-establish it. Having easy access off a busy Interstate highway is good, but they marketing it to a tribe of their own. There are many members of the Sikh community, which is originally from the Punjab province of India, that are involved in trucking business, and are commercial truck drivers. I know this, because I used to work at a truck parts store.

The restaurant is set up in a typical Indian style truck stop. Notice the bamboo mat partition between the counter and the kitchen? At first I thought the sign in the restaurant was part of the decor, but then I realized that the owners barely spoke any English, as one of the owners tried to communicate with my American friend.

So why am I sharing all this with you? Well, I am going to an Entrepreneurship workshop, and this happens to be a great example of entrepreneurship, and of an American Success story. Slow economy is a gold mine for entrepreneurs.

Are you taking full advantage of the economy to build and grow your business, or are you making excuses?
