Get Naked… to Come out Clean

I am not prefect. There, I said it.

I know, nobody expects me to be perfect, except me. And, therein lies the problem.

When you think you have to be perfect, then you can’t afford to make mistakes, but when you do, because you’re a human being and it is a part of being a human, then you can’t afford to let others see it for the fear that they’ll find out that you’re not perfect.

But the fact is that nobody is expecting you to be perfect because they already know that you’re not perfect. Nobody is. (Okay, maybe with an exception of Mac Davis)

So what happens when you pretend that you’re perfect?

Well, first and foremost, you stop growing because there is no room to grow if you’re already perfect.

Second, you begin to fear change. You fear it, because, change is inevitable, and in perfection there is no need for change.

So what do you do? You can’t avoid change, and change means growth, which you fail to recognize because you’re pretending to be perfect. It is kinda like… “What would happen if an unstoppable force met an immovable object?”

The laws of nature are the unstoppable force and your pretense to be perfect is far from an immovable object. You’re going down.

But you can’t lose, you’re perfect. Oh my, what are you going to do?

Yes, Rasheed, What are you going to do?

Well, I can quit and disappear from the face of the earth, or hide for a while and then slowly come out of hiding as if nothing has happened, and put on the same facade.

Oh sure, I’ll lose some readers. So what? More readers will come along and I can go on pretending to be perfect and if I stumble again, I’ll just repeat the process.

OR

I can admit that I am not perfect. I am capable of making mistakes and falling down. Be truthful and grow from each experience.

While I have accomplished a lot in life, succeeded often and failed often, and learned a few things along the way, I can do better.

I can succeed more often, fail less often, and learn a whole lot more, if I stop pretending to be perfect and come out clean. I choose to get naked and come out clean.

You may be able to gain a little advantage by lying to others, but when you lie to yourself, you lose it all.

I know better. I admit it, I am not perfect!

Special thanks to Sean Ogle (I am a Hypocrite), J D Bentley (Bullshit with Bullets), and Corbett Barr (Radical Lifestyle Transparency) for the inspiring posts that finally gave me the courage to come clean.

PS  Thank you for being the loyal readers and the support you have shown with your comments and emails in the past. I will do my best to stay active while I redesign my blog and rethink my strategy and direction for the blog.

Trying to put up perfect image is stressful and can only mean that if you fall you’ll fall hard to people’s cheers and applause. People don’t like perfect people normally.

    Appreciate the mention Rasheed!

The sooner we all realize that no one is perfect, the better we will all be.

Really like the blog design as well…

      Hey Sean,

Appreciate you stopping by, and thanks for the encouraging words. Before I read your post, I had seen a few others in the same vein, it was like the Universe was trying to tell me something. Then bam, bam. First you, then JD and then Corbett, all within like a week. So I was like, Okay, okay, I get the hint.

Thanks for being there all along.

Great post Rasheed! You’re absolutely spot on. I wonder how the human race ever got into this ‘perfect’ fix in the first place?! Oh right, the media… I’ve always found certain people’s obsession with trying to be perfect (I cringe when I hear it on TV or movies; US-made films/tv series are notorious!) very curious and terribly dangerous. Excellent that you’re getting the word out and putting everything into the right perspective, and so well-worded too! Very cool!

      Hey Keith,

Thank you, for your kind words and retweeting of the post. Yes, it is something we need to deal with, and hopefully, little by little we’ll gt there.

      Welcome to Present Day Nomads

As a recovering perfectionist, I like to remind myself to be curious, play and not take myself so damn seriously – I find that really helps!

Mistakes really aren’t the tragedy that I used to think they were.
