It was on my way from Vegas to Denver, that I had this epiphany.
Somewhere between enjoying the vista as it rolled by at 75 mph from the front seat of Greyhound bus, and pondering over my current circumstances in life, I must have dozzed off, because, suddenly, I opened my eyes and a “Oh, wow!” slipped out from between my lips, as I was awe struck by the natural beauty that I witnessed in the very moment.
The bus was passing through a canyon, and the “walls” were so close, it seemed like I could extend my arm and reach out to touch them. They were as high as I can see from my limited vantage point, and the whole event lasted maybe a few seconds. The road sign informed me that it was the Virgin River Canyon.
I wish I could describe the beauty I witnessed, but it is one of those things, like being in love; You experience it, you know it is real beyond the least shadow of a doubt, but the moment you try to describe it, you’re at a loss for words. Even if I had my camera handy, the resulting shot(s) would not have done it any justice, as evidenced by the multitude of videos of the area available on YouTube. Here is my favorite.
As the bus continued to roll down I-15, I was left with a deep feeling of gratitude to have witnessed it. Somewhere between gratitude and awe, it struck me. What if I had not been awakened at that precise moment in time and space?
I would have missed “the most beautiful stretch on any of the highways in America”, as one trucker said on one of the YouTube videos. I would have missed it, despite the fact that I was right there in the middle of the canyon.
That’s when I had the epiphany. “How often do we go through life with our eyes shut, and fail to witness the beauty that surrounds us all the time”? This is true both physically and spiritually.
It was a powerful reminder for me to live my life with conscious awareness, for which I am eternally grateful.
