One of my goals is to climb Mt Everest on my 75th Birthday.
Another one is to travel solo in a boat, the entire length of the three major rives; Amazon, Niles, and Ganges. What can I say, I am a nomad at heart.
In the Spring of last year, I was sitting in the orthodontist’s office while my children were getting their braces fitted, when a copy of Men’s Journal on the magazine rack caught my eyes. It sported a picture of Harrison Ford. But what really caught my attention was a teaser to an article inside about a three year plan to climb Mount Everest.
I read enough to get excited and gain enough knowledge to know that I was not in any shape or condition to follow that plan. I knew I would have to start getting in shape soon enough, if I was to ever make my dream of climbing Mt Everest a reality. A year went by before I took any action.
In May of this year, I made a commitment to make a first run at Everest on my 60th Birthday. Oh, BTW, my birthday is in April, which is one the best time to climb Everest
As a part of of that commitment, I decided to start blogging and chronicle my journey. I soon realized, that at this point I don’t have enough activity to sustain a blog on Everest alone, so I started this one as well, where I knew I can blog regularly enough to maintain it.
As I started to build stamina, I also started looking for the article in Men’s Journal. I couldn’t find it at the orthodontist’s office, or the library, so I looked online. (One of these days I’ll learn to make the Internet my first stop) I searched the Men’s Journal Website, but I couldn’t find it. I still haven’t found it, but I finally sent them an email asking for thier help. I’ll keep you posted.
While I was browsing the MJ site, I came across an article titled, Lost in Amazon. I was awe struck as I read the article about a man named Ed Stafford, who had undertaken a journey to walk the entire length of the Amazon River, from source to sea.
The more I read, the more I was astounded by the adventure. I found Ed on Twitter and started following his blog, Walking the Amazon. He blogs every Thursday, but he tweets whenever he gets an opportunity. He has already finished more than half his journey of 4,000 miles, and is currently traveling with Gadiel “Cho” Sanchez, who originally was hired as a guide, but decided to go all the way. If you haven’t read Walking the Amazon, I highly recommend it.
In the meantime, I am still looking for that article on Mt Everest. If you have a copy of the Magazine, and if you’re done reading and don’t need it, I would very much appreciate it if you can share it with me.
What kind of adventure are you dreaming of? What would you like to accomplish during your lifetime. Share it with us in the comments below.
