I woke up at 4 AM, and then my wife and I headed out to the beach at Galveston, TX. You might be thinking, are you crazy? Who would get up at 4 in the morning to go to the beach? How far are you from the beach?
Well, Galveston is about 75 miles from where we live in the north part of Houston, TX and it is about an hour and a half drive. So, we leave at around 4:20 to watch the Sunrise. Have you ever seen a sunrise before? If you look at the pictures only, you can’t tell the difference between a sunrise or a sunset, but in real life, they are very different, and the main differrence is in the feelings you feel. At least that is the case with me. I have seen sunrises and sunsets, and I’ll take a sunrise over a sunset any day.
This was our third trip in the last 24 months to Galveston to watch the sunrise, and this was the third time that we were disappointed. Because of the haze and low clouds, we weren’t able to see the sun as it came out, and by the time the sun was visible, it was too bright and all the colors were gone.
The last time was a little better, but nothing compared to the one we saw a couple of years ago, when we had stayed at the island and drove out to the east end in the early morning. When we caught the first glimpse, it was both breathtaking and heart stopping at the same time. The sun was partially out and the Galveston Bay looked like someone had filled it with bright red paint, and the sun appeared to be melting right into the bay. The miracle only lasted maybe two seconds, or so it seemed. By the time we parked our car and pulled out the camera the effect was gone. That’s what kept drawing us back to Galveston in the wee hours of the morning.
As we were returning from Galveston, I suddenly realized that the gorgeous sunrise we had seen was in the winter time, while we have returned all three times in summer. So, now the plan is to come back in the winter to see if we can catch it again, and if I do, you’ll be in for a treat.
In the meantime, let me treat you with a few shots I took yesterday. I will be doing another post about this trip in the next few days concerning some things I was extremely disappointed about.
So what do you like better, a sunrise or a sunset? or does it matter to you? Tell us in the comments below what do you like and why?
